Municipality-Led EPWP Programme Targets Youth Graduates in Ga-Segonyana

Municipality-Led EPWP Programme Targets Youth Graduates in Ga-Segonyana

Local municipalities continue to play a frontline role in creating short-term work opportunities for unemployed youth, particularly in communities where access to formal employment remains limited. In the Northern Cape, Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality has announced a new EPWP youth graduate intake, aimed at placing young people into environmental and community-based roles.

The initiative targets 50 unemployed graduates residing in the Ga-Segonyana area and forms part of a broader public employment effort focused on environmental protection and waste management at local level.

Programme Linked to Environmental and Waste Management Work

The EPWP placements are being implemented in partnership with the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, aligning the programme with national environmental priorities.

According to the municipality, successful candidates will support community-driven waste management, climate awareness, and environmental compliance activities, while gaining practical work exposure over a fixed period.

Roles Available Under the EPWP Intake

Graduates selected for the programme will be placed in one of the following roles:

  • Climate Change Ambassadors
  • Waste Campaigners
  • Occupational Health and Safety Compliance Officers

These roles are aimed at graduates with an interest in environmental conservation, sustainability, occupational health and safety, and community development. The work is expected to take place within local communities under municipal supervision.

Duration and Stipend

The EPWP programme will run for a six-month period. Participants will receive a daily stipend of R247, providing short-term income support while they gain workplace experience.

The municipality has indicated that the programme is intended as a temporary employment intervention and does not guarantee permanent placement after completion.

Application Process and Submission Method

Unlike many online recruitment processes, applications for this EPWP intake must be submitted in person. Interested candidates are required to hand-deliver their applications to Mr Ambrose Keetile’s Office at the Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality main building. Officail advert can be viewed here.

Applications must include a CV, as well as certified copies of a South African ID and relevant qualifications. Incomplete applications will not be considered.

Closing Date and Enquiries

The closing date for applications is Friday, 20 February 2026. Late submissions will not be accepted.

For further information, applicants may contact Mr Keetile’s Office on (053) 712 9300.

Programme Authorisation

The call for applications has been issued under the authority of Mr Martin Tsatsimpe, Municipal Manager of Ga-Segonyana Local Municipality.

Why This Programme Matters

For many graduates in smaller municipalities, opportunities to gain formal work experience are limited. Programmes such as this EPWP intake offer short-term income, practical exposure, and a chance to contribute to local environmental and waste management initiatives, which can be valuable stepping stones into longer-term roles in environmental, climate, or OHS-related fields.
