Lion Smelter Internship Programme Opens for Engineering and Environmental Graduates

Mining and commodities company Glencore has opened applications for the Lion Smelter Internship Programme 2026, offering practical workplace training opportunities for South African graduates.

The programme will take place at the Lion Smelter operations in Steelpoort, Limpopo, where selected candidates will gain industry experience in engineering and environmental management within a large mining and smelting facility.

Successful applicants will complete a 12-month internship contract, working alongside experienced professionals while completing their P1 and P2 practical training requirements.

Electrical Engineering Internship (1 Post)

Qualification required:

  • National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering

Environmental Health and Management Internship (HSEC) (1 Post)

Qualification required:

  • National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health and Management

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria.

  • Must hold a relevant National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree
  • Must have computer literacy, including MS Office
  • Must demonstrate strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Must be initiative-driven and results oriented

Internship Duration

  • Contract type: Fixed-term internship contract
  • Location: Lion Smelter, Steelpoort, Limpopo

Key Responsibilities

During the internship programme, successful candidates will:

  • Complete Practical Training (P1 and P2) under the guidance of a mentor
  • Gain hands-on workplace exposure at the Lion Smelter operations
  • Prepare and submit quarterly training progress reports
  • Follow workplace health and safety regulations
  • Assist with administrative and operational tasks
  • Work rotational shifts when required
