SANDF MSDS 2027 Intake Applications Open for Military Training Programme
The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) has opened applications for the Military Skills Development System (MSDS) 2027 intake, giving young South Africans the opportunity to join the military through a structured training programme.
The MSDS programme combines military training, leadership development and operational experience across the different branches of the defence force.
Applications are open from 16 February 2026 until 27 March 2026.
What the SANDF MSDS Programme Offers
The Military Skills Development System is a two-year military training programme designed to prepare young recruits for service in the South African National Defence Force.
During the first year, recruits undergo
- Basic military training
- Functional and specialised training linked to their service division
During the second year, successful recruits are placed at operational units where they gain
- Practical military experience
- Leadership development
- Operational exposure within defence and security structures

Minimum Requirements
Applicants must meet the following criteria.
- Be a South African citizen with no dual citizenship
- Be between 18 and 22 years old for Grade 12 applicants
- Be between 18 and 26 years old for applicants with a three-year tertiary qualification
- Meet the required APS score excluding Life Orientation
- Have Mathematics and Physical Science for specialised musterings such as engineering roles
- Have no criminal record or pending cases
- Meet the required medical fitness standards including drug testing and psychometric assessments
- Have no visible tattoos while wearing military uniform

Applicants must submit the following documents.
- Certified copy of South African ID
- Certified copy of Matric certificate (2025 results accepted)
- Tertiary qualification documents where applicable
