Engineering Technician (Production Level): Road System Development (4 posts)

The Department of Infrastructure, Western Cape Government has opportunities for four (4) suitably qualified and competent individuals to render technical services and assistance to the Sub-Directorate Road Programme Management, Transport Infrastructure.

Minimum Requirements

  • An appropriate 3-year National Diploma in Civil Engineering or relevant qualification; Compulsory registration with the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA) as an Engineering Technician; A minimum of 3 years relevant post qualification technical (Civil engineering) experience; A valid driving license (Code B or higher).
  • Knowledge of the following: Geo technical and pavement design of roads; Road infrastructure material; Technical support service knowledge in respect of material quality control and management for road and bridge construction; Legal compliance; As-built and standard specifications; Ability to solve broadly defined technological challenges through application of proven techniques and procedures; Communication (written and verbal); Interpersonal skills; People Management; Planning and organising; Record keeping; Problem solving; Change management; Knowledge or experience in the condition assessments of surfaced and gravel roads; Efficient skills in report writing and presenting; Willing to travel to sites and work away from home; Efficient computer literacy and good knowledge of MS Office suite; Team player.
  • Grade A: R 407 337 - Grade C: R 610 131 per annum (Salary will be determined based on post registration experience as per OSD prescribed)
  • Note on remuneration: to-employer (CTE) remuneration packages for certain occupation-specific dispensations (OSD), the middle-management service (MMS) and contract positions are inclusive of all costs related to service benefits or obligations including basic salary, 13th cheque, medical assistance, housing assistance, pension-fund contributions, etc. MMS remuneration packages are flexible and may be individually structured as prescribed. Where remuneration is not indicated as CTE, employees' service benefits or obligations are funded or co-funded in terms of the applicable prescripts or collective agreements.
  • Shortlisted candidates will be required to attend interviews on a date and time determined by the department and submit documentation for verification purposes and criminal record vetting. All shortlisted candidates shall undertake two pre-entryassessments. One will be a practical exercise to determine a candidate’s suitability based on the post’s technical and generic requirements and the other must be an integrity (ethical conduct) assessment. The selection process will be guided by the EE targets of the employing department.

  • Render technical services in line with qualification; Assist engineers, technologists and associates in the field; Provide and consolidate inputs to the technical / engineering operational plan; Promote safety in line with statutory and regulatory requirements; Evaluate existing technical manuals, standard drawings and procedures to incorporate new technology and produce technical designs with specifications and submit for evaluation and approval by the relevant authority; Compile and submit reports as required; Develop, implement and maintain system databases; Liaise with relevant stakeholders on engineering related matters; The following will be advantageous: Working knowledge or experience in the condition assessments of surfaced and gravel roads; Efficient skills in report writing and presenting; Willing to travel to sites and work away from home; Efficient computer literacy and good working knowledge of MS Office suite.
